Firstly, I knew next to nothing about it, just a vague idea of one of the songs and not even sure it was on that record. Second, I wasn't sure there was such a vinyl in the house nor where my husband might store things. Thirdly -- for what!?? Fourthly, I can count on one hand the number of times I have initiated a musical recording of any kind. </p><p>Anyway, after a search, I found and played it. It felt good. Big deal.</p><p>However a day later there was nothing but stuff about about the album and Pink Floyd on radio, on TV. </p><p>Called this a "doodie". </p><p>Broadly, criteria are: it seems to appear out of nowhere, it is unattached to usual affiliated things, it comes up within a couple of days after entering the noggin unbidden.</p><p>Things such as "I was just thinking of you and now you have phoned me" do not count! Loads of readily accessible reasons for such a coincidence. </p><p>There have been several such episodes since. Husbands tries to shoe-horn some of his coincidences into the category but rarely succeeds (ha ha) - mostly just regular coincidences that can be explained as "just thinking of ya" types of coincidences.</p><p>Today, I was rummaging in my FO's (Finished Objects) that hang about in trunks and drawers when I fetched out perhaps my biggest Doodie.</p><p>In October 2019 I was taken with the idea of knitting a rug based on the relationship between RNA bases and the proteins they represent. This means, when the heddle is in the up position (all the holes and their respective warps raised ) the hole warps are accompanied by half of the slot wars and any weft placed in that shed cover just the other half of the shoot warps. Then with he heddle again in the up position, the previously unaided slot warps are also raised and any yarn in the shed formed cover just the other half of the slot wefts. Then the heddle is placed in the down position, all the hole warps are down and all the slot warps are up and any yarn in that shed covers ll the hole warps. A bit of a head wrecker!!</div><div><br /></div><div>To accomplish this, the heddle is placed down and all the slot warps are up. A pickup stick is placed under every second warp behind the heddle. One can pick up all the other warps with another stick but this will not work while weaving as the second stick will interfere with the first so unless you want to replace the second pickup stick every second pick, a thread heddle is needed.</div><div><br /></div><div>This is not hard, just fiddly to make all the threads - but quite doable.</div><div>Here is my little sampler one behind the heddle.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; Then the parts are combined.</p><p>I was surprised by how well it came together with such a simple pattern.</p><p>I plan to wear it over a long-sliver T-shirt type top in spring.</p><p>No suitable tops available at time of photo. nor had I soaked and shaped the top but made do with the striped one in the photo in order to get the photo done before I forget to record it.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xsRaoUZWy4A/YaD4GDLTZlI/AAAAAAAAFeg/jhjdg58_D-YUhA-XCvye0S6515RNSaqgACLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/Brenda%2Bknit%2Btop%2Bhall.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xsRaoUZWy4A/YaD4GDLTZlI/AAAAAAAAFeg/jhjdg58_D-YUhA-XCvye0S6515RNSaqgACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/Brenda%2Bknit%2Btop%2Bhall.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OiDvxLTRkS4/YaD4VVcVxWI/AAAAAAAAFeo/T8Vz6BQaIxYaC5rG2IIBOLog4KjTqq2nACLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/Brenda%2Bknit%2Btop%2BA.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1940" data-original-width="2048" height="303" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OiDvxLTRkS4/YaD4VVcVxWI/AAAAAAAAFeo/T8Vz6BQaIxYaC5rG2IIBOLog4KjTqq2nACLcBGAsYHQ/s320/Brenda%2Bknit%2Btop%2BA.png" width="320" /></a></div><div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div>It feels better than it looks!<br /><p><br /></p>Catherinehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04497496109723565603noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-4336601700111484290.post-66140735371340533762021-05-23T17:50:00.002+01:002021-05-23T17:50:42.280+01:00Lockdown spinning knitted<p> I knitted several items from the Merino I got from Wollknoll.</p><p>I decided to post photos of some of them as it is good for looking them up in the future.</p><p><br /></p><p>I has a Donegal Tweed pattern book for quite some time without ever knitting any of the jumpers or cards from it. As the lockdown proceeded I thought it might be a good time to tackle on of them using my hands-on.</p><p>I got a KG of green Merino from Wollknoll and spun it into an aranweight yarn and commenced the smaller size.</p><p>Aa it turned out, I had two problems: I didn't have quite enough to add the collar and I could not make head nor tail of the instructions for the front pieces. So I had to improvise. It turned out quite well despite this. </p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tcc_Fx-co8E/YKqDikvA8zI/AAAAAAAAFZo/RFbJc2xUvyQVygd_e8UMBB-ylc2UfqXywCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/Debbie%2BB%2BKilcar%2Bback.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; I've haunted all the walking sports pithing 5 kg of my house and really miss the beaches which are out of bounds.</p><p>I ordered from my favorate source, Wolleknoll, Oberot-Neuhausen , Germany. Their web site has an English language version and I get their catalog. I love that it is so easy to distinguish exactly what is on offer with details such as Price/Kg, number of microns clearly indicated on each fibres type. Thecolors are lovely too.</p><p>I went for two packs of Chubut assorted colours, 16.5 microns. It is easy to track the order and it arrived in a few days. </p><p>The fibre is very very soft yet easy enough to spin.</p><p>I've played around with it without any real end-product in mind other than making lots of different sorts of yarn - with color play, different weights/plys and techniques.</p><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7kou-YNu9kU/X7PN_h-gH6I/AAAAAAAAFLs/qoJ0knBPl4oSAoTNhpGpi26uUIci9qwfACLcBGAsYHQ/s640/Ready%2Bto%2Bspin.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="400" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7kou-YNu9kU/X7PN_h-gH6I/AAAAAAAAFLs/qoJ0knBPl4oSAoTNhpGpi26uUIci9qwfACLcBGAsYHQ/w300-h400/Ready%2Bto%2Bspin.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">First off, I decided to make a chunky three-ply using pink, light green and grey. <br />
When I brush my Border Collie ( redhead called Connie), I often save the softest brushings and put a handful in a little net bag (off fruit) then wash with Fairy Liquid and leave it to dry.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fob4fjpQ8ok/XuEDIL2CDGI/AAAAAAAAFFI/JTejqDOC2yU3lMtyTPEB6Wk3vtuyvlrigCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/Connie%2BNew%2BYears%2B2018.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="360" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-fob4fjpQ8ok/XuEDIL2CDGI/AAAAAAAAFFI/JTejqDOC2yU3lMtyTPEB6Wk3vtuyvlrigCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/Connie%2BNew%2BYears%2B2018.JPG" width="360" /></a></div>

<br />
I had built up enough to spin a fair amount of two-plied singles. I then went in search of a pattern that might suit this soft fuzzy yarn.<br />
<br />
As it was next-to-delicate-skin type yarn, I looked for some type of neck warmer such as a cowl.<br />
Low and behold, I found just the thing on Ravelry, Absolu Keyhole Cowl by Stephanie Steinhaus.<br />
Her pattern on Ravelry:<br />
<img class="photo_image" height="400" id="photo_image_59603123" src="https://images4-g.ravelrycache.com/uploads/UnwindYarn/390011570/absolu__1_.jpg" style="left: -74px; top: -367px;" width="223" /><br />
<br />
The yarn even looks similar to Coagora<br />
<br />
This is howdy Cangora version it looks:<br />

Takes up a lot less room now - but not sure what it will eventually become.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JaNJ0nPztvA/Xr6_iqbEXzI/AAAAAAAAFDg/_fPZC1f_y2IrlG2oFbGJClFUElIa-_GCwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/Spun%2BAlpaca.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-JaNJ0nPztvA/Xr6_iqbEXzI/AAAAAAAAFDg/_fPZC1f_y2IrlG2oFbGJClFUElIa-_GCwCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/Spun%2BAlpaca.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Three LONG hanks and one smaller one.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The long ones make up 513 yards of approx. 8 twists per inch.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There are of course some thin bits (this being home-prepped and hand-spun).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There is also a smaller hank that I've not measured</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The colors is sort of milk chocolate.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It feels soft and is draped rather than bouncy.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The reason for the long (and eventually inconvenient although visually alluring) hanks - had to do with possible weaving - but I"m not sure now.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Ah well!</div>

<br />
It is taking up space and I have to make a decision as to what should happed to it.<br />
<br />
None of it is either exotic or fine enough to offer to another spinner so it comes down to spin it or bin it.<br />
<br />
I have already disposed of several small samples of different fibre in a mixed batt which was fun to make. It is spun into singles and plied with Logwood dyed singles to make a bulky yarn - which takes up much less space as a hank than the raw fibre did and it may well find itself in a new knitted or crocheted rug.<br />
<br />
Next, I have a rather ugly sheep-feed plastic bag full of raw uncleaned russet-coloured Alpaca fleece, donated to me by someone who themselves had it from an Alpaca owner, quite a few years ago now.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ya9j6dHNevI/XlrNe7xAUII/AAAAAAAAFBE/0etp1vsImV4teqNuf5UaArSmhY_NjkB0ACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/Alpaca%2Bfleece.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ya9j6dHNevI/XlrNe7xAUII/AAAAAAAAFBE/0etp1vsImV4teqNuf5UaArSmhY_NjkB0ACLcBGAsYHQ/s400/Alpaca%2Bfleece.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I decided to drum-card it, draw off rollags and spin woolen-style on my Ashford Traveller. I've spun something similar before but used combing and worsted spinning and got a fairly harsh yarn. I don't know if this was due to the fleece that time being coarser, or whether I had not selected from it properly, leaving in too much leg hair for example but anyway, I want this one t to be softer and "squishier".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Initially I took locks, teased them and removed noils, nibs, second cuts and dirt and then drum-carded a batt. The batt came about 3/4 ways up the tynes of the carder. I then drew it off using a dowel rod I had forming a pretty large role!! Large indeed - much too big and dense to spin easily.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oX8QUoHW8Lw/XlrPGjXdtiI/AAAAAAAAFBQ/hVwIgQrseDMylIT4toQpUcn6YQ10Ted6ACLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/Alpaca%2Brolag%2B29%2Bgms%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-oX8QUoHW8Lw/XlrPGjXdtiI/AAAAAAAAFBQ/hVwIgQrseDMylIT4toQpUcn6YQ10Ted6ACLcBGAsYHQ/s400/Alpaca%2Brolag%2B29%2Bgms%2B1.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Turns out it weighed about 29 grams - much too big.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
After some testing, I settled on carding 4 grams of cleaned and teased locks and drew it off on a small rolling pin to create a much more open role.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This spun pretty easily into a single which plys back on itself with 4 - 5 twists per inch. I've kept a sample for further spinning and will work my way through this over the coming week.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I note old Border Collie, Hudson, above in the photo. At 18 years old, he is rather limited in his abilities yet he manages to show up wherever the action is and like his younger step-sister Connie, can obstruct that action including bringing the spinning wheel to a halt with his hinders.</div>

The tiny attic is filled with washed fleece from my previous flock in Ardnacraney and there are several bags of fleece, unprocessed or combed or carded hanging around and I cannot remember why I selected them and placed them in mysterious bags.<br />
<br />
I decided I must either prep. and spin these latter or, shocks and horror ,<b> throw them out!!</b><br />
<br />
So, prep and spin it is - for now.<br />
<br />
I drum carded several different types of sheep' wool together with bits of silk, bamboo and Angelina and spun the batt into a single on my Ashford Traveller, freely but prioritising softness over evenness.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CPjMF8ZcAdk/XlRjDc9ntSI/AAAAAAAAE90/tkd6xMGm0JMDGmiUrh00NR2HI-AjXnG4QCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/MIXED%2BBATT%2BNESTS%2BPRE%2BSPIN.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CPjMF8ZcAdk/XlRjDc9ntSI/AAAAAAAAE90/tkd6xMGm0JMDGmiUrh00NR2HI-AjXnG4QCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/MIXED%2BBATT%2BNESTS%2BPRE%2BSPIN.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
DAU* Texel cross, Jacob, Doggie down**, silk, bamboo, tonsil all mixed up.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
*Droim An Uan. Border Collie undercoat</div>
<br />
<br />
I planned to spin another spool of singles dyed in a darker colour compared to those in the batt.<br />
<br />
Hanging about is a bag of Logwood chips and a rather stained stocking also containing Logwood chips - probably pre-used.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sW0jKtQHyXo/XlRl3OQU7UI/AAAAAAAAE_M/27RgoV3FlRcLQC_k3_LkIvvoiMLqagChQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/Logwood%2Bstocking.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-sW0jKtQHyXo/XlRl3OQU7UI/AAAAAAAAE_M/27RgoV3FlRcLQC_k3_LkIvvoiMLqagChQCLcBGAsYHQ/s400/Logwood%2Bstocking.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The dried chops are in the zip-lock bag and the previously used chips are stored after use in stockings to be used again.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
These were given to me several years ago by a good friend and I was rather fearful of trying to use them until I had done a dying workshop at Irish Fibre crafters in Ardrahan last December.<br />
<br />
I looked up the method of dying with Logwood and proceeded.<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
Of note, my hands became quite blue after working with the dyed fibre.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kMxjVyrtEN0/XlRmiRsKTBI/AAAAAAAAE_k/7DIhl3_lowUyP8EaIJeCX1KrQH7ZQ_HAgCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/Purple%2Bhand.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-kMxjVyrtEN0/XlRmiRsKTBI/AAAAAAAAE_k/7DIhl3_lowUyP8EaIJeCX1KrQH7ZQ_HAgCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/Purple%2Bhand.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
The Logwood dye seemed not to be water soluble, but rubbed off with a nailbrush and washing up liquid. Then I realised that this dye is Haematoxylin, much used in bio laboratories to stain cells in histology and microbiology so it liked my skin but not the water!<br />
<br />
The final yarn plied up as a super-chunky "Logwood and multi" yarn - about 97 yards<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<br />
<br />
WENSLYDALE<br />
<br />
Almost as a reaction to the chunkiness, I find myself spinning lighter weight yarn from Wensleydale carded fibre.<br />
<br />
The 1798 Spinners are planning to display various sheep breeds' locks, spun and swatched at the Tinahely ag. show this summer. Being prone to self-torment, I decided on the Wensleydale as my example. I stought to find a source within the Republic of Ireland. (I tend to try to keep my spending as local as I can i.e. in the ROI and, failing that, within the EU. The latter is not easy as the search engines seem to be loaded against this, favouring UK and US - but that's another days work).<br />
<br />
Anyway, I did find just one Wens. flock in the ROI - which has since dispersed but the former flock owner was able to furnish me with some deep green dyed locks first and then about 450 gms of carded locks. All very nice indeed.<br />
<br />
I made a b*l*s of spinning the green locks I think although I may later incorporate them in a shawl or some such but they do illustrate the way these long locks retains their ouster after dying. Plus, it was great fun to do.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-leeA9nYbGB0/XlmRJXHLWKI/AAAAAAAAFAM/h5yL997n2cMqQyWE5spYpQYI_x-nZiRSwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/WENSLEYDALE%2BGREEN%2BLOCKS.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-leeA9nYbGB0/XlmRJXHLWKI/AAAAAAAAFAM/h5yL997n2cMqQyWE5spYpQYI_x-nZiRSwCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/WENSLEYDALE%2BGREEN%2BLOCKS.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
Now I'm testing how to spin the carded fibre and have settled on a low-twist (only about 4 per inch softly plied. I'm using 4 - 5 inch backward draw slowly twisting and with little tension. The "trick" will be to ply it stable so as to avoid a yarn which is too lax to knit comfortably. I'm planning a weight around 9 - 10 wraps per inch and then dye the two-plied yarn with a sequence of four colours.<br />
<br />
I have dye made up in bottles for some time so I plan to use these with the addition of some citric acid to aid binding.<br />
<br />
<br />
I decided to spin the singles on the eSpinner and then ply them on the Ashford Traveller spinning wheel.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<iframe allowfullscreen='allowfullscreen' webkitallowfullscreen='webkitallowfullscreen' mozallowfullscreen='mozallowfullscreen' width='320' height='266' src='https://www.blogger.com/video.g?token=AD6v5dydWijW_g0YxrkaX6aInS6L2n1OkALJhYcilh6ACv75DUSBlRe89C9eQ-JYOB6p5Z8DItTRnda9pfuPlDbCQQ' class='b-hbp-video b-uploaded' frameborder='0'></iframe></div>
<br /></div>
Tried to keep hands well apart but as you can see, I was in and out dealing with various thicknesses and then testing a length for "twistiness". If too twisty, drawing back until it reduces then run onto the spindle.<br />
Looking for a finer yarn width but tried not to make it too firm/string-like.<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Dye bottles, tested on some kitchen paper - I wanted bejewelled colours if possible.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

YARN DESCRIPTION<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In accordance with what one might expect from the long-locked Wensleydale breed, the yarn drapes rather then bounces and has a fairly good sheen after dying.</div>

They spin in The Irish National Heritage Centre ( <span style="color: #006621; font-size: 16px;">https://www.irishheritage.ie ) </span>once a month and various other places in addition.<br />
They are a lovely group and I've been spinning away with them since - of note, we went to the Tinahely Agricultural show ( <span style="color: #006621; font-size: 16px;">www.tinahelyshow.ie ) </span>as a group in the woolly corner (along with a variety of sheep and fleece) which was great fun not least as the lunch served there was of very good quality.<br />
<br />
Huddie (now 17 1/2 years old) found his spot on one of my old knitted mats<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--Jhp9RnxGb0/XYtHrqBJLyI/AAAAAAAAE38/9X466P9eT4QN4EMFxS4_BIPsJbeLVSRzwCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/Huddie%2Bfinds%2Bhis%2Bspot.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="626" data-original-width="640" height="391" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/--Jhp9RnxGb0/XYtHrqBJLyI/AAAAAAAAE38/9X466P9eT4QN4EMFxS4_BIPsJbeLVSRzwCLcBGAsYHQ/s400/Huddie%2Bfinds%2Bhis%2Bspot.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
and Connie ensconced amid the clutter<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qeaaOfX6H-0/XYtS0BjsHtI/AAAAAAAAE5Y/ZUPvEUDjC9AedHFljTFWI_xNo-DgcMcegCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/Connie%2BEnsconced.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-qeaaOfX6H-0/XYtS0BjsHtI/AAAAAAAAE5Y/ZUPvEUDjC9AedHFljTFWI_xNo-DgcMcegCLcBGAsYHQ/s400/Connie%2BEnsconced.JPG" width="400" /></a></div>
<br />
All the biggest house renovations have been completed and the place is quite lovable now - though the garden is a mess and we've had no luck finding Landscaping assistance so far. However many of the worst elements have been tackles.<br />
Great to be able to walk to Wexford fort in minutes.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cMcoqu0DzDA/XYtJM2h6nAI/AAAAAAAAE4I/q_BjVR-h-HQLf3PY9pAqqFuIQ8tBAseDQCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/Wexfort%2BPort%2BSept%2B2019.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="640" height="300" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-cMcoqu0DzDA/XYtJM2h6nAI/AAAAAAAAE4I/q_BjVR-h-HQLf3PY9pAqqFuIQ8tBAseDQCLcBGAsYHQ/s400/Wexfort%2BPort%2BSept%2B2019.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<br />
Sheep fleece is now residing in the very small attic and I do have a fine craft area to spin and prep fibre in without always having to clear everything away owing the the presence of a second table around the corner in the kitchen area.<br />
<br />
We have a very short walk to the shops and only a little further to Wexford Harbour. Short drives to Rosslair beach and Curracloe beach are regulars for me and Collie Connie. There a many other places to visit and walk (Johnstown Clatle and grounds, Ferrybank etc).<br />
<br />

The weather has finally changed this September 22 'though we can't complain after the pretty glorious summer we had.<br />
Anyway, I can get on with crafts in my NEW CRAFT AREA :).<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VMGqZb2BwC0/XYtL6yp96fI/AAAAAAAAE4w/TXYnJIKMz2sZ4dLVzC_UFuVL8Kup5Fl7gCLcBGAsYHQ/s1600/Craft%2BRoom%2BWD.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="480" height="640" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VMGqZb2BwC0/XYtL6yp96fI/AAAAAAAAE4w/TXYnJIKMz2sZ4dLVzC_UFuVL8Kup5Fl7gCLcBGAsYHQ/s640/Craft%2BRoom%2BWD.jpg" width="480" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
I'm on the second sleeve of a top-down knitted cards using my maroon hand-spun Merino.<br />
It looks as though it might Fionn Mac Comhaill when complete yet it seems to kinda fit when I try to on me. Ah well - we'll see.<br />
Adding more ribbing at the end to balance out the heavy top part of the card. - One very good thing about top-down garments, it is possible to provisionally cast off at the bottom and revive the stitches to add more rib later - unlike the situation when one casts on and goes rib-up.<br />
<br />
<br />
Two of my knitted rugs were sold from Irish Fibre Crafters in Ardrahan, Co. Galway, (www.IrishFibreCrafters.com ) where I left them under the auspices of Sandra, the lovely creator of same. Very glad they were found to be attractive to another and gone off into the world - so I can go right ahead and make more with a clear conscience :). <br />

It was exceptionally lovely weather and perfect for outside spinning.<br />

So far so good - emerged from a festoon of cardboard boxes 'though several still around and mysterious.<br />
<br />
Washed fleece arrived hidden in the under-bed drawers - don't know what the movers thought when they caught a glimpse.<br />
<br />
Drum carder required assistance - got a bit bent-out-of shape but running well now thanks to OH and youtube.<br />
<br />
Attended the market day at Babbles retreat in Tipperary yesterday -(https://www.babblestravellingyarns.com ). Very pleasant - lots of fibre chat and small market. Plus the weather was glorious.<br />
<br />
Several hanks of the German roving now complete but plan to start on my rug yarn ASAP now that the drum carder is complete. It will have to compete with house and garden renovations though. Thinking about my neighbour's flock back in our pasture in Ardnacraney. Wish them well - maybe get more fleece at shearing time? NO Catherine, finish what you've got!<br />
<br />
Pics later I hope.<br />

<br />
OH complains that he cannot get socks with long enough legs in them - knee length as it were.<br />
<br />
SO obtained a dark coloured sock yarn - maroon UU hand dyed and set up on 2.5 mm needles.<br />
Based on a swatch and several measurements of leg ankle and foot worked out a simple pattern.<br />
<br />
The first sock is a perfect fit but - horror or horrors - not enough for a full length second sock.<br />
<br />
What to do?? Knit a second sock as far as the ankle where there were no increases and then ripped bak the first sock (boo hoo) to the same point then shared the remaining yarn between the two, continuing I 1 x 1 rib.<br />
<br />
Not as long as I'd like but better than the usual.<br />
<br />
Along the way, several knotty problems encountered.<br />
First, the yarn is a nightmare - it splits into 4 + every chance it gets. That means a dropped stitch or picking up stitches along edged or after ripping is a massive chore.<br />
<br />
Next, ripping the already made-up sock from the cast-on edge is impossible so a lifeline and cutting an edge stitch was implied with great difficulty.<br />
<br />
However, it eventually worked out and I have a template pattern for OH's legs.<br />
<br />

<br />
Feb 2019<br />
Sold my little flock some time ago as getting too old to keep them now. Sad to loose them but had my neighbours sheep on the land since then.<br />
More recently, we are planning to relocate to Co. Wexford - and will continue to spin and knit there - using my washed stored fleece and other fibres.<br />
Right now, in the interim, I'm staying in lovely surroundings in Co. Wicklow - among the hills and of course, the local sheep.<br />
<div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UaBSNi02x0E/XJFZBNDJyTI/AAAAAAAAE0w/qNIVIUTvS9UOQwvBWX81NCD7qaQf5f0KgCLcBGAs/s1600/Yarn%2Bholder.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="640" data-original-width="556" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-UaBSNi02x0E/XJFZBNDJyTI/AAAAAAAAE0w/qNIVIUTvS9UOQwvBWX81NCD7qaQf5f0KgCLcBGAs/s400/Yarn%2Bholder.jpg" width="347" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
ANYWAY, currently working on a pair of Knee Socks for OH. He's not enamoured with he ankle socks commonly available in shops. Bought a hank of Sock Yarn by HHF in Athlone. It's hand dyed, 90@ Merino, 10 % nylon. (Very expensive for me but I was in a rush as about to leave for Wicklow and all my stuff in storage). </div>
<div>
At 107 gms, I knew it would be a stretch to get knee socks for a mans foot from that amount but went ahead. I took measurements from his leg and foot and worked out the numbers of stitches to cast on and where to do decreases so it fits exactly.</div>
<div>
Finished one and found, of course, there would not be enough for a second one of the same size so now I'll have to rip it to the end of the decreases and split the difference between the two of them.I'll do a provisional cast on for the second on then add rib to both of them and add another yarn to complete both in the end.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Cannot find my little box of knitting accessories GRRRR. Must be in storage. Oh for a crochet hook especially when I drop a stitch and this yarn splits and slip so easily. Must find a craft shop - but where?? </div>
<div>
On a search - seems the yarn room gone - that would have been the nearest. Ah well. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>

<br />
By now. it has been soaked and partially dried and is being shaped a little with strings threaded along each side.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I know it will have a non-slip backing when completed but I've a lot of decisions to make about what to do with the long edges - perhaps nothing, perhaps a crochet border - but this risks causing tension and disfigurement when washed later - so....a discontinuous edging???</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hmmm - I'll see</div>

<br />
This is a small amount (about 57 gas) of lumpy-bumpy yarn I spun using a silver thread plied with a blend of my sheep wall and some Angora rabbit fibre. It feels pretty nice but it is quite thin so I tested several stitch types to get one that would add bulk to the fabric and went for a slip-stitch pattern I found (above) in an old magazine.<br />
There is not enough for two full mitts so the ribs, top and bottom, will be knit from some another remnant of arty-type wool which is hanging around looking for a home.<br />

This is a traditional Shetland knitting pattern which is fairly easy to master.<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Used up several Christmassy coloured remenants of my hand-spun and hand-dyed yards - I hate to throw them out even if there is not enough for a hat or mat (my usual knitted items).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For the shoulder strap, I warped the rigid heddle,10 dent, with singles - knowing I would not be to use the heddle to beat them and they would fray. Used a little plastic ruler to press the wefts down. Two of the warps did fall apart but I have no problem fixing that with another length of yearn. The hardest part was actually passing the weft as that is a very thin yarn, so thin I had to use it doubled and pass it twice for each pick, wrapping it around the outer warp yarn before returning. This worked OK and I like the resulting strap - I like these straps so much that I wish I had an excuse to make more.</div>

SO, I knit them into long, long narrow stripy scarves such as this one below, which is 7ft 7 inches/231 cm long and only 3 - 4 inches/7.5 - 10 cm wide.<br />
Worn doubled, it is so warm and neat and the different bars on it remind me of the fibres I spun e.f. Wensleydale sheep fleece, grey and white alpaca, my own buxom wellies and the soft light orange-brown doggydown from my red Border Collie.<br />
